1800 Call to Reverend Benjamin Mitchell

The following is a list of members from the congregation of Ballymoney First Presbyterian Church who signed their name in support of the Reverend Benjamin Mitchell, on 8 September 1800.

Reverend Mitchell was a contentious figure, most notably due to his political views. He had supported the United Irishmen, a Rebel society who failed in an attempted Rebellion in 1798, and he had been imprisoned in 1797 for alleged involvement in their illegal activities.

The appointment of Reverend Mitchell was widely disapproved of in the Presbytery of Route and this forced Ballymoney to join the neighbouring Presbytery of Ballymena. With the majority of the congregation in his favour, he was ordained in Ballymoney on 12 November 1800.

Due to failing health, the Reverend Mitchell resigned in 1815.
